The Blue Gravel Mine in Smartsville was said to be the richest in the state. Its success was due to a 14,000-foot tunnel that ran from the river to the upper portion of the lower stratum—called blue gravel because of its distinctive color. Blocks on the inside of the sluice are shown here. These blocks are approximately 16 inches on a side and 8–10 inches thick. In this arrangement, the blocks are in a single row, but in the sluice boxes, there may be a double row of blocks. Also visible are the crevices around the edges of the blocks, where the gold was trapped before the water and mud were discharged. (Courtesy of Library of Congress.)
